About the Role
This position is responsible for designing fixtures used in the Product Evaluation/Test Department. You will collaborate with Engineering and Management to create effective fixture designs for evaluating prototype and production products and components.
Key Responsibilities
- Design various lab fixtures, including dynamometers, component loading and holding fixtures, safety test apparatus, and life testing fixtures.
- Prepare fixture design layouts and coordinate with project team members for seamless integration.
- Perform basic design calculations (gear ratios, speeds, weight distribution).
- Liaise with internal specialists (CAE, manufacturing engineers) and external experts.
- Utilize the best available technology in all design aspects.
- Ensure designed parts are manufacturable.
- Maintain accurate parts lists and coordinate part release for fixture assembly.
- Collaborate with design and test engineers to incorporate product designs into fixtures, manage design updates, and resolve issues.
- Utilize CAD/CREO for project-related work.
- Keep supervisor informed of project status and any required assistance.
- Stay updated on new design, manufacturing, and materials developments.
- Perform miscellaneous duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Education & Experience:
- Accredited technical school degree in machine design and drafting (2-year course) plus 0-2 years of entry-level design experience in mechanical drafting/design.
- OR Bachelor of Science degree in an engineering-related technology (e.g., Automotive, Manufacturing, Design) from an accredited university/college.
- Skills & Knowledge:
- 1+ year(s) of experience in mechanical drafting.
- Demonstrated design capability.
- Knowledge of mechanical calculations (force, torque, speed, acceleration).
- Troubleshooting test fixture operations.
- Familiarity with fabrication processes: sheet metal bending, welding, machining (mill, lathe, multi-axis), fastener selection, casting, painting.
- Basic understanding of general fixture design principles.
- Basic knowledge of Data Acquisition tools (multi-meter, gauges, thermistors/thermocouples).
- Ability to identify and sort relevant information.
- Basic knowledge of regulatory standards for mobile machinery.
- Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
- Willingness to travel to test sites.
