About Wayfair's Product Ranking Team

Wayfair's Product Ranking team builds the core platforms and services that enable customers to discover and buy products they love. In the past year alone, the team has contributed to hundreds of millions in incremental revenue by leveraging Wayfair's extensive customer and product data to deliver trusted, valuable recommendations in real-time using custom machine learning models. These models are productionalized as microservices, supported by data pipelines for inference and model training.

Our services are utilized across storefront and marketing channels, receiving over a billion calls daily. They must support both real-time customer traffic and batch email jobs, presenting unique challenges in scalability, throughput, and response times.

We are seeking an experienced Engineering Manager to help build our next-generation product recommendations platform. This is a highly impactful and fully autonomous team whose models, services, and platforms leverage massive amounts of customer and catalog data in real-time to personalize the customer experience. We have ambitious goals to shape the future of Wayfair and are looking for an engineering manager to accelerate our progress.

What You'll Do

  • Lead and manage a team of 5-9 engineers focused on building services, integrations, and tools that power the business and its interactions with partners.
  • Own the team's technical and performance output.
  • Mentor engineers through training, coaching, code reviews, and 1:1s, fostering career and professional development.
  • Collaborate within your pod, across the workgroup, and with the wider Wayfair Engineering team to deliver value.
  • Be accountable for systems built by your team, including technical design, development, testing, monitoring, and deployment.
  • Engage the team in constructing the technical roadmap and lead planning, delivery, and continuous improvement efforts.
  • Partner with product management to define roadmaps, ensuring the team has a clear mission and well-defined KPIs.
  • Elevate technical and process standards.

We Are a Match Because You Have

  • 6 years of software development experience, with strong familiarity in Java SpringBoot. Experience with Google Cloud Platform or AWS is a plus.
  • 3 years of experience managing a high-performing engineering team.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Experience scaling low-latency REST/gRPC and ML-powered services.
  • Understanding of integrating ML models (TensorFlow, ONNX, or Python gRPC) into production services.
  • Proficiency with Docker, Kubernetes, Helm, and CI/CD pipelines (e.g., ArgoCD, GitHub Actions).
  • Practical experience with Redis, Elasticsearch, or NoSQL stores (Aerospike, BigTable, etc.) for low-latency workloads.
  • Creative problem-solving skills with an eye for process, code, and architectural improvements.
  • A collaborative approach and strong communication skills, with the ability to work effectively with engineers, product managers, machine learning scientists, data scientists, and business stakeholders.
