About Woven by Toyota
Woven by Toyota contributes to Toyota's once-in-a-century transformation into a mobility company. Inspired by our history of inventing "for the sake of others," our mission is to expand the definition of mobility, enhance its societal contributions, and challenge the status quo of mobility through human-centered innovation.
We operate around four pillars: AD/ADAS (Autonomous Driving/Advanced Driver-Assistance Systems), Arene (a vehicle software production platform for Software Defined Vehicles), Woven City (a mobility test course), and Cloud & AI (digital infrastructure supporting collaborative platforms). Essential business functions support these teams, working together to achieve a "zero-accident society" and "mass production of happiness."
About the Team
Toyota redefines the meaning of mobility, moving people, goods, information, and energy, continuously challenging the status quo. Woven City serves as a test course for creating and testing various mobilities, aiming for the mass production of happiness with the concepts of a human-centered city, a city for実証実験 (jisshō jikken - demonstration experiments), and an unfinished city.
Woven City brings together diverse individuals who share a vision for future mobility. Inventors, Weavers, and Visitors will live and conduct demonstration experiments with various products and services on this city-shaped test course where people, mobility, and social infrastructure interconnect.

About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Machine Learning Engineer/Data Scientist with deep expertise in Large Language Models (LLMs) to design and implement human-centered, autonomous AI systems, with a particular focus on Japanese language and culturally specific challenges.
Daily responsibilities include technical R&D, Proof of Concepts (POCs), system design, agent-based workflow design, LLM fine-tuning and evaluation, and inference optimization. Strong software development skills and proven experience in developing real-time, production-grade systems are essential.
This position reports to a Functional Lead and operates on a hybrid work model, with occasional travel to Woven City (a few times a month).
Responsibilities
- Design and develop scalable LLM-based solutions for human-interactive AI systems.
- Collect and prepare datasets for LLM product and service development.
- Collaborate with other departments to make technical decisions and define architecture.
- Build and optimize ML/LLM pipelines, from data ingestion to automated model serving.
Qualifications
Must-Haves
- Master's degree in Computer Science or a related field, or equivalent practical experience in building complex AI systems.
- Extensive experience with machine learning and related frameworks (e.g., PyTorch, Hugging Face ecosystem).
- 4+ years of hands-on experience with Large Language Models (LLMs) and Natural Language Processing (NLP) techniques (e.g., transformers, prompt engineering, fine-tuning, embedding models).
- Business-level English proficiency and professional-level Japanese proficiency (not necessarily native) to evaluate model outputs, create datasets, and understand linguistic nuances.
Nice-to-Haves
- Experience in developing LLM-powered products (e.g., AI assistants, chatbots, conversational AI systems).
- High motivation for staying updated with the latest technologies.
- Ability to rapidly implement solutions based on recent research papers.
- Experience with multimodal models combining text, image, audio, or behavioral data.
- Knowledge of model optimization techniques (quantization, distillation, inference acceleration).
Important Notes
- All interviews are typically conducted via Google Meet.
- Job postings are available in both English and Japanese. Please apply to only one version.
- While we prefer English resumes, Japanese resumes may be requested during the selection process for certain positions if submitted initially.
