Location: REMOTE Job Type: Part-time, Remote
Description
AS&M has an exciting opportunity for a remote, part-time Polarimeter Research Scientist to provide support for the NASA Langley Research Center (LaRC).
Responsibilities
Qualified individuals will be proficient in vector radiative transfer theory, machine learning, optimal estimation theory, and Python. They will work alongside NASA scientists and engineers to develop operational airborne and satellite retrieval algorithms for passive polarimeter instruments and active remote sensing lidar instruments. This work will support the upcoming NASA PolCube CubeSat polarimeter mission and the NASA Plankton, Aerosol, Cloud, ocean Ecosystem (PACE) mission. This will involve performing extensive analyses under different scenarios and creating programs and scripts to transform polarimetric and lidar simulations into an autonomous, AI-driven, operational software retrieval system.
The successful candidate will further investigate and optimize radiative transfer models and simulators, and apply scientific machine learning techniques to remote sensing applications for aerosol, ocean, and trace gas retrievals. Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential, as the selected applicant will lead and contribute to peer-reviewed publications and make presentations to local team meetings and global science conferences. This position offers an excellent opportunity for a graduate with a strong analytical background, coupled with computer programming and machine learning expertise, and the communication skills necessary to manage multiple tasks in a dynamic and collaborative science-driven environment.
Required Qualifications
- Proof of U.S. Citizenship is required for this position.
- Must be able to complete a U.S. government background investigation.
- B.S. in Computer Science, Physics, or a closely related science or technical field.
- Programming experience developing and implementing remote sensing algorithms in Fortran and Python.
- Experience in the use and development of models, numerical analysis, neural network, and machine learning techniques.
- Ability to work independently as well as within an integrated team of scientists, engineers, and students.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, as the selected applicant will contribute to peer-reviewed publications and local to global science conference presentations.
Desired Qualifications
- Experience working with large data sets.
- Solid understanding and experience following a strict configuration management approach, using version control systems such as Git/GitHub/GitLab.
