Cloud Engineer (AWS) - Remote | Contract-to-Hire (6 Months)
Location: 100% Remote Engagement Type: Contract-to-Hire (6 months conversion target)
About the Role
We are seeking a Cloud Engineer with 2-3 years of recent AWS experience to support the buildout of scalable, secure AWS cloud infrastructure. This role collaborates with cloud architects, security teams, and application teams to establish repeatable, compliant cloud environments supporting multi-tenant applications and mission workloads. What You'll Do
- Support the buildout of AWS cloud infrastructure across development, test, staging, and production environments.
- Assist with AWS networking setup, including VPCs, subnets, route tables, security groups, load balancers, DNS, Transit Gateway, and account connectivity.
- Use Terraform to deploy AWS infrastructure in a repeatable and controlled manner.
- Support the creation and configuration of IAM roles, policies, permission sets, and least-privilege access models.
- Assist with Linux and Red Hat Enterprise Linux server setup, configuration, hardening, and baseline validation.
- Use GitLab to support infrastructure code repositories, version control, merge requests, and deployment workflows.
- Support initial configuration of AWS services such as EC2, S3, KMS, CloudWatch, CloudTrail, AWS Config, GuardDuty, Security Hub, Route 53, and related services.
- Assist with Risk Management Framework (RMF) and Authority to Operate (ATO) activities by supporting control implementation, evidence collection, STIG alignment, and vulnerability remediation.
- Collaborate with architects and security teams to ensure infrastructure aligns with approved design patterns and security requirements.
- Document build steps, configurations, implementation notes, and deployment evidence.
Required Experience
- 2-3 years of hands-on AWS experience, with that experience occurring within the last 3 years.
- Experience supporting AWS environment buildouts or cloud infrastructure deployments.
- Working knowledge of AWS networking, including VPCs, subnets, routing, security groups, load balancers, and DNS.
- Experience using Terraform or similar Infrastructure as Code tools.
- Working knowledge of IAM policies, roles, permissions, and least-privilege access.
- Experience with Linux and Red Hat Enterprise Linux configuration.
- Familiarity with GitLab, source control, infrastructure repositories, and CI/CD concepts.
- General understanding of RMF, STIGs, security controls, vulnerability remediation, and ATO support.
- Ability to follow architecture direction, troubleshoot buildout issues, and clearly document technical work.
Nice to Have
- Experience supporting AWS multi-account or multi-tenant infrastructure.
- Familiarity with AWS Organizations, Transit Gateway, Service Control Policies, Ansible, CloudFormation, ACAS/Nessus, or eMASS.
- Experience supporting DoD, federal, or other regulated cloud environments.
