AI Research & Engineering Intern

Location: Remote (United States)

Duration: Summer 2026 (Flexible)

Compensation: Unpaid, academic credit may be available through participating university programs

About ArcellAI

ArcellAI is building agentic context infrastructure for health, science, and engineering.

As AI systems become more capable, organizations face a growing challenge: data is fragmented across documents, databases, applications, sensors, experiments, and operational systems. Traditional AI tools struggle because they lack the context needed to reason reliably across these environments.

ArcellAI helps solve this problem by combining AI agents, multimodal data systems, provenance tracking, validation, and context-aware reasoning into a unified platform that enables trustworthy AI workflows.

Our work spans healthcare, biotechnology, advanced manufacturing, engineering, and other data-intensive industries.

About the Role

We're looking for ambitious students who want to work on challenging AI and engineering problems in a fast-paced startup environment.

As an AI Research & Engineering Intern, you will work directly with the founding team to build and evaluate AI systems, develop data infrastructure, create research prototypes, and explore emerging applications of agentic AI.

This is not a typical internship. Interns are given meaningful ownership and the opportunity to contribute to real products, research initiatives, and customer-facing projects.

What You'll Work On

Depending on your interests and background, projects may include:

  • Building and evaluating AI agents for real-world workflows
  • Developing AI-powered applications and prototypes
  • Designing systems for multimodal data integration and analysis
  • Building tools for data lineage, validation, and reproducibility
  • Creating knowledge graphs and context-aware reasoning systems
  • Developing software infrastructure for AI and data-intensive applications
  • Conducting technical research on emerging AI technologies
  • Supporting customer pilots and product development initiatives

Qualifications

Required

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor's, Master's, or PhD degree in Computer Science, Data Science, Engineering, Mathematics, Statistics, Cognitive Science, Bioengineering, or a related field
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Experience programming in Python or another modern programming language
  • Ability to learn quickly and work independently
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills

Preferred

  • Experience with AI, machine learning, LLMs, or data science projects
  • Familiarity with Git, APIs, cloud platforms, or modern software development workflows
  • Experience working with structured, unstructured, or multimodal data
  • Interest in AI agents, automation, knowledge graphs, or data infrastructure
  • Research experience, open-source contributions, or personal technical projects
  • Interest in startups and emerging technologies

What You'll Gain

  • Direct mentorship from startup founders and technical leaders
  • Hands-on experience building production-oriented AI systems
  • Exposure to cutting-edge developments in AI, data infrastructure, and autonomous systems
  • Ownership of meaningful projects with real-world impact
  • Experience working in an early-stage startup environment
  • Opportunities to collaborate across engineering, research, product, and business functions

Academic Credit

While this is an unpaid internship, ArcellAI has successfully worked with university internship and independent study programs, including students from UC San Diego, New York University, and MIT. We are happy to work with selected candidates and their academic departments to facilitate academic credit where available.

How to Apply

Please email your application to [email protected].

Include:

  • Your resume
  • A brief description of your background
  • A short note explaining your interest in ArcellAI and this internship

Who Should Apply

This role is ideal for students who:

  • Enjoy tackling difficult technical problems
  • Like building things from scratch
  • Are excited by the future of AI and intelligent systems
  • Want exposure to both research and engineering
  • Thrive in environments with high autonomy and ownership

If you've built projects, conducted research, contributed to open source, participated in hackathons, or simply enjoy learning and building, we'd encourage you to apply.
