Role Description
This is a part-time, remote Electrical Engineer role within the AU Digital and Innovation Fellowship. The Electrical Engineer will analyze existing electrical infrastructures and energy-related systems within AU units and associated projects, identifying gaps, risks, and opportunities for optimization.
Day-to-day tasks include:
- Designing and reviewing electrical systems.
- Developing power distribution concepts for digital and innovation projects.
- Supporting the integration of reliable power solutions for ICT, data, and civic engagement platforms.
The role involves collaborating with multidisciplinary teams (including software, data, and policy experts), preparing technical documentation and schematics, and ensuring compliance with relevant standards and safety requirements. The Electrical Engineer will also provide recommendations on sustainable, cost-effective, and resilient power systems suitable for diverse African contexts.
Qualifications
- Strong foundation in core electrical engineering principles, including Electricity and Electrical Engineering, with the ability to apply them to practical, innovation-focused projects.
- Proficiency in Electrical Design and Power Distribution, including the development and review of schematics, layouts, and load calculations for digital and ICT-related infrastructures.
- Experience with Power Systems, including reliability analysis, grid and off-grid solutions, and integration of backup or renewable energy options.
- Bachelor's degree or higher in Electrical Engineering or a closely related field, or equivalent practical experience.
- Familiarity with relevant electrical codes, standards, and safety practices applicable in African or comparable contexts.
- Ability to work independently in a remote, multicultural environment, manage part-time workload effectively, and collaborate with cross-functional teams.
- Strong analytical, problem-solving, and documentation skills, including the ability to translate technical insights into clear, actionable recommendations for non-technical stakeholders.
- Experience working on development, public sector, or civic technology projects in Africa is an asset; prior engagement with international or regional organizations is a plus.
