Job Summary

Eaton's Electrical division is seeking an Embedded Firmware Specialist for their Raleigh, NC location. This is a hybrid role, requiring 3 days in office and 2 days remote.

About the Role

As an Embedded Firmware Specialist, you will play a key role in developing and enhancing the firmware architecture for Eaton's current and future platforms, including three-phase UPS, energy transition, and EV charging products. You will collaborate with senior engineers and cross-functional teams to align platforms, influence technical decisions, and ensure solutions meet high standards for performance, reliability, safety, cybersecurity, and maintainability. This position involves close work with global product, controls, hardware, and verification teams to guide technological advancements in Critical Power Solutions.

The estimated annual salary for this position ranges from $122,000 to $179,000. Please note that actual salary is determined by candidate skills, experience, qualifications, and market conditions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the successful delivery of critical power solutions that align with customer expectations and Eaton's standards for safety, quality, reliability, cost, and schedule.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to define requirements and support system-level designs for three-phase UPS systems, high-power DC chargers, energy storage, and related power electronics products.
  • Shape and evolve firmware architecture across platforms and product variants, focusing on interfaces, modularity, and non-functional requirements like timing, reliability, safety, and maintainability.
  • Lead architecture and design reviews, establish engineering standards, and ensure alignment of practices across global regions and projects.
  • Partner with product managers and technical product owners to define requirements, set platform roadmaps, and drive sustaining and next-generation platform plans.
  • Work closely with controls and hardware teams to facilitate effective hardware-software co-design and robust embedded implementations.
  • Collaborate with Verification & Validation (V&V) teams to define appropriate verification methods, including Hardware-in-the-Loop (HIL)/Software-in-the-Loop (SIL) strategies, design verification plans, and diagnostic approaches, ensuring traceability from requirements to test evidence.
  • Provide technical leadership during critical issue resolution, supporting root cause analysis and continuous improvement efforts.
  • Stay current with embedded firmware best practices and industry standards, integrating relevant improvements into Eaton's firmware processes.

Basic Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical, Computer, or Software Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum of 9 years of embedded software/firmware development experience using C/C++ in real-time systems.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience defining firmware architecture or leading firmware design for complex, multi-team or multi-product embedded platforms.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience with Real-Time Operating System (RTOS) based development (e.g., FreeRTOS, Zephyr, or equivalent).
  • Minimum of 2 years of experience developing firmware for power electronics systems (three-phase UPS, inverter/rectifier, DC-DC controls, power conversion topologies) or similar high-reliability embedded domains.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master's degree or PhD in Electrical or Software Engineering.
  • Experience developing control algorithms using model-based or auto-code generation tools (e.g., Simulink, Stateflow).
  • Experience with embedded Linux.
  • Strong understanding of power systems and power electronics.
  • Experience in regulated or security-conscious environments, applying secure development practices.
  • Ability to interpret low-level hardware specifications and schematics.
  • Hands-on experience with firmware and controls validation using HIL platforms (e.g., OPAL-RT).
