Overview

GovCIO is currently hiring for a Full-Stack Software Engineer with strong backend experience to join a team partnering with the Department of Veterans Affairs. You will enhance Veteran-facing digital financial management tools by designing, developing, testing, and deploying new features to help Veterans and their families manage VA debts through self-service solutions. This position is fully remote within the United States.

Responsibilities

While this role will primarily support backend development, our team looks for someone interested in and capable of working across the tech stack. We are looking for someone with a passion for working on important problems that have a lasting impact on millions of users and make a difference in our government.

  • Designs and codes applications following specifications.
  • Maintains and modifies existing software applications.
  • Analyzes detailed systems factors, including input/output requirements, information flow, and hardware/software requirements.
  • Participates in code reviews to ensure adherence to standards.
  • Writes or revises program documentation and user guides.
  • Contributes to a cross-functional Agile team to build, refactor, and maintain React and Rails components, APIs, and backend services.
  • Designs and maintains automated unit, integration, and end-to-end tests using frameworks such as RSpec.
  • Incorporates accessibility (Section 508, WCAG 2.1AA) and US Web Design System standards.
  • Builds and ships quality software using pair programming, test-driven development, and AI-powered developer tools (e.g., Copilot, Cursor).
  • Applies DevOps practices (CI/CD, monitoring, cloud services) to ensure reliable delivery.
  • Participates in backlog refinement, user story acceptance criteria, and story sizing.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree with 8 years of experience (or commensurate experience).
  • 5 years of professional engineering experience with Ruby on Rails and modern JavaScript frameworks.
  • 3 years of production experience with React.js.
  • 3 years of production experience with Ruby on Rails and SQL.
  • Experience experimenting with and/or utilizing AI tools to deliver software.
  • Experience working in an agile, cross-functional team.
  • Must have lived and worked in the United States for 3 out of the last 5 years (and at least the last year).
  • Experience with DevOps processes (CI/CD, monitoring, automation).
  • Experience writing automated tests.
  • Experience in cloud environments (AWS or equivalent).
  • Ability to acquire and maintain Suitability/Public Trust clearance.

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Experience with Sidekiq and Redis.
  • Experience with the latest React features (hooks, context API).
  • Familiarity with monitoring tools, especially Datadog.
  • Experience with CI/CD systems (Jenkins, GitHub Actions).
  • Familiarity with the US Web Design System and AI development tools.

Posted Salary Range

USD $140,000.00 - USD $150,000.00 /Yr.
