Our current project, Abyssfall: The Black Citadel, is a 2D tower defense game featuring real-time combat, RPG-style progression, and player-controlled abilities. As an early-stage studio based in San Diego, CA, we are focused on building strong gameplay systems, clear visual identity, and scalable design.

Role Description

This is a part-time, remote role for a Software Engineering Intern specializing in game development. The role involves working directly on gameplay systems and contributing to core features of an in-development indie game.

The candidate will work closely with the founder to design and implement gameplay systems, write efficient and scalable code, debug technical issues, and iterate on features to improve gameplay feel and performance.

Role Details

  • Part-time: ~10 hours per week
  • Compensation: $17/hour
  • Remote, flexible schedule

Responsibilities

  • Implement gameplay systems (enemy behavior, wave systems, combat logic)
  • Develop features using Godot (GDScript)
  • Debug, test, and optimize gameplay performance
  • Collaborate on system design and feature iteration
  • Work directly with the founder on core technical decisions

Qualifications

  • Currently enrolled in a Bachelor's program in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field
  • Basic programming experience (any language)
  • Interest in game development and gameplay systems
  • Ability to think through logic and problem-solving

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience with Godot, Unity, or Unreal
  • Personal or academic game projects
  • Familiarity with Git
  • Interest in tabletop RPGs or Dungeons & Dragons-style gameplay and worldbuilding

This role is ideal for students looking to gain real, hands-on experience in game development and contribute to a live project.
