Accountabilities

  • Lead and evolve the organization's AI legal and governance program, including oversight of AI compliance, training data licensing, AI-generated content ownership, and emerging global AI regulations.
  • Serve as the primary legal advisor to product management, engineering, and AI/ML teams throughout the product development lifecycle.
  • Design and implement governance frameworks related to AI risk management, product compliance, open-source usage, and third-party technology integrations.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate complex technology agreements, including software licensing, AI/data licensing, and strategic partnerships.
  • Support intellectual property strategy and oversee legal matters related to patents, software innovation, and product commercialization.
  • Lead legal due diligence and risk assessments for mergers, acquisitions, investments, and strategic transactions involving technology and AI assets.
  • Advise on export control regulations, software compliance, and international product deployment considerations.
  • Monitor developments in AI, data privacy, intellectual property, and technology law, translating legal changes into actionable business guidance.
  • Develop internal legal training programs and educational resources to strengthen legal literacy and compliance across technical and business teams.
  • Drive process improvements and cross-functional legal initiatives to support scalable and efficient product governance.

Requirements

  • Juris Doctor (J.D.) degree from an accredited law school and active membership in at least one State Bar.
  • Minimum 10 years of combined law firm and/or in-house legal experience, including significant work in product counsel, intellectual property, or technology transactions.
  • At least 5 years of experience focused on intellectual property law and technology-related legal matters.
  • Strong expertise in AI and machine learning legal issues, including governance frameworks, licensing models, generative AI risks, and emerging regulations such as the EU AI Act.
  • Technical fluency in software systems, AI/ML technologies, and product development processes, with the ability to collaborate closely with engineers and technical stakeholders.
  • Experience handling technology transactions, software licensing, data protection, export control compliance, and strategic partnerships.
  • Demonstrated executive leadership skills with the ability to influence senior stakeholders and lead complex cross-functional initiatives.
  • Strong analytical, organizational, negotiation, and communication skills.
  • Ability to balance legal risk management with practical business objectives in a fast-paced environment.
  • Engineering or other technical degree and experience within high-tech or software industries is strongly preferred.
