About the Role

Sargent & Lundy's Consulting group is seeking a Senior Performance Engineer with specialized experience in solar PV energy yield assessments for utility-scale projects. This role offers the opportunity to focus on solar PV and battery energy storage performance modeling, with potential to expand expertise into CSP, wind, geothermal, simple- and combined-cycle gas, RICE, and fuel cell projects. You will engage with clients including utilities, developers, IPPs, and data center developers on high-visibility consulting projects.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform solar resource assessments using satellite-based and ground-based data.
  • Analyze operational production, performance, and climatic data from solar projects.
  • Lead and mentor a team of performance engineers on modeling, design review, and technical optimization for solar, wind, and battery energy storage projects.
  • Conduct long-term solar PV energy production assessments using PVsyst and Excel-based post-processing tools.
  • Focus primarily on utility-scale solar assessments, with support for residential, commercial, and industrial scales.
  • Predict energy production and perform uncertainty analyses for probabilities of exceedance (P90, P95, P99).
  • Conduct statistical uncertainty analyses and clipping-adjusted degradation analysis.
  • Participate in energy yield assessment process improvement and validation initiatives.
  • Write technical due diligence reports and present findings to clients and stakeholders.
  • Incorporate appropriate PV modeling assumptions and inputs into simulations.
  • Communicate with clients to address technical questions regarding solar resource and energy yield.

Independent Engineering & Due Diligence Support

  • Evaluate solar equipment selections and technologies.
  • Assess EPC contractor execution plans.
  • Review project contracts (PPA, EPC, O&M agreements).
  • Analyze project CAPEX, OPEX, and performance parameters in financial models.

Additional Duties

  • Prepare and review engineering deliverables (reports, studies, calculations).
  • Demonstrate knowledge of NEC, IEEE, UL, and IEC standards for solar design and performance.
  • Collaborate with team members on project execution plans.
  • Monitor project schedules and budgets.
  • Support multiple projects simultaneously while maintaining high quality standards.
  • Interface with clients to understand requests and ensure successful project execution.
  • Familiarity with inverter/load ratio strategies, bifacial gain, and soiling/loss estimation.
  • Prepare proposals for new business development.
  • Occasional travel to project locations and client offices.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering or a science discipline (e.g., chemistry, physics, materials science) or a related field.
  • Comprehensive understanding of solar resource assessment and energy yield prediction methodology.
  • 10 years of experience in the energy industry, including one or more of the following:
    • Design of utility-scale solar projects.
    • Renewable energy consulting.
    • Renewable due diligence services.
    • Uncertainty and statistical data analysis.
    • Proficiency with data analysis tools.
    • Familiarity with renewable energy project execution and finance.
    • Statistical modeling and data analytics.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Experience writing technical reports and proposals.
  • Solid interpersonal skills and ability to guide others.
  • Project planning and leadership skills.

Note: We do not sponsor employees for work authorization in the U.S. for this position.

AI & Automation Focus

  • Lead teams in applying data, automation, and AI to engineering problems, improving workflows and reducing rework.
  • Direct automation and process-improvement initiatives (e.g., automating calculations, summarizing documents, generating design documentation).
  • Guide the appropriate use of AI and agentic AI tools, ensuring results are verified.
  • Experience with programming/scripting (e.g., Python, MATLAB, advanced Excel) for task automation is valued but not required.
  • Additional learning in Computer Science, AI, Software Engineering, or related fields is a plus.
