About Sentinel Blue

Sentinel Blue is seeking an Automation Engineer to join our Platforms Team. This role is perfect for individuals who view repetitive manual tasks as opportunities for code-based solutions and who enjoy integrating systems to streamline processes across engineering, operations, and service delivery. We are looking for a practical builder skilled in designing clean API integrations, developing robust automation, and understanding identity, authentication, and workflow management from start to finish. This position will empower our internal teams and clients by developing and maintaining the automation, integrations, and tools essential for platform efficiency, consistency, and scalability.

This is a full-time, fully remote position. U.S. citizenship is mandatory for this role due to the nature of our work, and eligibility for a clearance is required. No exceptions.

A Day in the Life of an Automation Engineer

An Automation Engineer at Sentinel Blue may be involved in:

  • Designing API-driven integrations between various SaaS platforms.
  • Writing scripts and developing tools to automate provisioning and lifecycle management tasks.
  • Building and maintaining automated workflows.
  • Contributing to infrastructure-as-code (IaC) to enable repeatable deployments.

The primary focus will be on reducing operational overhead, eliminating manual handoffs, and creating reusable automation components for internal teams.

Collaboration and Growth

The Automation Engineer will collaborate closely with Operations, Security, and Service Delivery teams to:

  • Understand challenges and identify opportunities for automation.
  • Deliver solutions that seamlessly integrate into existing workflows.
  • Participate in design discussions and contribute to technical standards.
  • Continuously enhance the reliability and observability of automation systems.

This role offers exposure to modern API platforms, identity systems, workflow engines, and IaC tools, with potential for growth into senior platform engineering or automation architecture positions.

Responsibilities

  • Design, build, and maintain automation integrating SaaS platforms, internal tools, and cloud services across client and internal environments.
  • Develop and consume REST APIs, including OAuth2 authentication flows, token lifecycle management, and error handling for production-grade integrations.
  • Write scripts and tooling in PowerShell, Python, or other relevant languages for automation of provisioning, configuration, reporting, and lifecycle tasks.
  • Build infrastructure-as-code using Terraform or similar frameworks for repeatable, version-controlled deployments.
  • Partner with internal teams to identify manual workflows, scope automation opportunities, and deliver user-centric solutions.
  • Implement automation with appropriate security measures, including secrets management, least-privilege access, logging, and observability.
  • Maintain and improve existing automations, including refactoring, documentation, and migrating fragile workflows.
  • Clearly communicate automation designs, integration patterns, and operational guidance to internal teams and stakeholders.
  • Contribute to platform documentation, standards, runbooks, and architectural diagrams.
  • Identify opportunities to reduce manual effort, improve consistency, and enhance the user experience through automation.

What We Offer

Sentinel Blue is a dynamic, mission-driven company focused on delivering enterprise-class cybersecurity to small and medium-sized businesses. We are at the forefront of innovation, constantly seeking new ways to achieve our goals. This is an environment where you can:

  • Engage with new and emerging technologies.
  • Embrace challenging projects and continuously develop your skills.
  • Transition quickly into senior platform engineering or automation architecture roles based on performance.
  • Enjoy a fun, collaborative atmosphere while working on impactful problems.

Certification: You will be required to obtain a CompTIA Security+ certification within the first 6 months of hire. Sentinel Blue will cover all certification costs and provide paid time for study.

Requirements

  • U.S. Citizenship: Required for all employees due to our work in the defense industry; eligibility for a Secret clearance is necessary.
  • Experience: 2+ years in automation engineering, platform engineering, DevOps, software engineering, or a related technical field.
  • API Experience: Hands-on experience designing and consuming REST APIs in production, including pagination, rate limiting, retries, and error handling.
  • Authentication: Practical understanding of OAuth2 flows (authorization code, client credentials, PKCE) and modern authentication patterns (token lifecycle, refresh handling).
  • Scripting: Proficiency in scripting languages such as PowerShell, Python, or comparable, with the ability to select the appropriate tool for the task.
  • Infrastructure-as-Code: Practical experience with Terraform or equivalent IaC frameworks.
  • Security Awareness: Strong understanding of how automation interacts with identity, secrets, and access control, and the ability to build secure automation.
  • Collaboration: Demonstrated ability to work across teams, translate operational needs into automation requirements, and deliver adopted solutions.
  • Communication: Strong written and verbal communication skills, capable of explaining technical designs and trade-offs to diverse stakeholders.
  • Certification: CompTIA Security+ certification required within the first 6 months of hire.

Desired Qualifications

  • Experience building or operating multi-tenant applications, especially in Microsoft Entra ID environments.
  • Experience with CI/CD platforms like GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps, or similar.
  • Hands-on experience with workflow automation platforms (e.g., n8n, Azure Logic Apps, Power Automate).
  • Familiarity with Azure, Azure Government, and Office 365 GCC High environments.
  • Working knowledge of security and compliance frameworks (e.g., NIST 800-53, FedRAMP, CMMC).
  • Experience in a multi-tenant or managed services environment.
  • Exposure to message queues, event-driven architectures, or webhook-based integration patterns.
  • A strong passion for reducing operational toil through code.
  • Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Cybersecurity, or equivalent relevant experience.

Benefits

  • Fully paid individual healthcare, vision, and dental insurance for employees.
  • Paid certification and training opportunities.
  • Generous paid time off: three weeks of vacation plus 10 paid holidays.
  • A supportive work environment focused on maintaining a healthy work-life balance.
  • Retirement savings plan (401k) with a company match.
