About Steer

Steer offers a suite of software tools for today's automotive repair shop, combining essential tools into one user-friendly, cost-effective platform. This allows shop owners to focus on their business, reducing worries about marketing and customer retention.

Initially an online directory for drivers to find mechanics, Steer has evolved into a comprehensive Customer Relationship Management (CRM) marketing suite. Features include text messaging, email automation, direct mail integration, reputation management, appointment reminders, and more. Steer is a recognized leader in the automotive repair industry, continuously innovating. In August 2024, Steer acquired AutoOps, a leader in intelligent scheduling software, enabling seamless online and Google Business Profile appointment booking.

About the Role

We are expanding our engineering team to advance our CRM platform and seek a visionary Lead Full Stack Engineer for our Core Platform Team.

Unlike roles in large tech companies that may focus on a single microservice, a Lead role at Steer involves architecting a platform with the goal of market dominance. This is a high-impact position for individuals who not only write excellent code but also anticipate future needs, challenge norms, and lead products from conception to launch.

Our teams are actively transitioning to an agentic-first approach, where engineers design systems around autonomous, AI-driven workflows, not just use AI as a tool. This is our current development methodology.

Why Steer?

  • True Ownership: Lead significant products within agile, high-velocity teams from inception to completion.
  • Hyper-Growth & Vision: We are positioned for massive scale within the automotive industry and you will be instrumental in shaping this sector.
  • Freedom to Innovate: Experiment with and implement cutting-edge technologies directly into our core product, eliminating the need for side projects.
  • AI-First & Agentic Culture: Embrace an agentic-first philosophy, prioritizing high-level problem-solving and AI/LLM expertise. We encourage the use of AI tools to accelerate development and power autonomous production workflows.

What You'll Do

  • Technical Strategy & Ownership: Focus on optimizing the core components of the Steer CRM, particularly data ingestion and processing, to enhance automation capabilities.
  • Architectural Vision: Design scalable, reusable full-stack components and services to ensure platform performance as we aim for market leadership.
  • Adaptive Development: Dynamically adjust focus between new integrations and core infrastructure development based on evolving business requirements, ensuring a seamless ecosystem.
  • Customer-Centric Engineering: Collaborate with Product Management to understand user needs and ensure architectural decisions deliver tangible value to auto repair shops.
  • Code Excellence: Promote best practices in security, automated testing, and maintainability. Conduct in-depth code reviews to enhance the engineering team's capabilities.
  • Modern DevOps & Agentic Infrastructure: Influence CI/CD pipelines, containerization (Docker, Kubernetes), and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) practices. Design and maintain AI-integrated, agentic-ready infrastructure to support autonomous workflows.

What You Have

Must Have:

  • 7+ years of professional experience in developing complex, web-based SaaS products.
  • AI & LLM Integration: Demonstrated experience with LLMs and prompt engineering, utilizing AI to overcome challenges and speed up development.
  • AI in Production: Proven track record of deploying AI-powered features and autonomous (agentic) workflows within production environments.
  • AI-Driven CI/CD: Hands-on experience integrating AI tools into CI/CD pipelines, such as AI-assisted code reviews, automated testing, or agentic workflow orchestration.
  • Database Expertise: Proficiency with both relational (e.g., PostgreSQL, MySQL) and NoSQL (e.g., MongoDB, Redis) databases, including schema design and query optimization.
  • The "Owner" Mindset: A history of taking full project accountability and a drive to solve complex problems in dynamic settings.
  • Exceptional Communication: Ability to articulate complex technical concepts in terms of product value and collaborate effectively with leadership.

Nice to Have:

  • Familiarity with our technology stack: .NET, Node.js (TypeScript), and React.
  • Experience with Infrastructure as Code tools like Terraform or CloudFormation.
  • Prior experience as a founding engineer or in an early-stage startup.
  • Experience building or integrating with Claude marketplace plugins (Anthropic ecosystem), including prompt chaining, tool use, or MCP integrations.

Interview Process

  1. Initial Screen: 30 minutes with a Lead Recruiter.
  2. Hiring Manager Interview: 60 minutes with the Head of Engineering & Product.
  3. Technical Interview: 60 minutes with a Principal Engineer.
  4. Collaborative Interview: 30 minutes with a Technical Product Manager.

What We Offer

  • Equity Options: Share in the company's growth and success.
  • 100% Remote: Work from any location within the US.
  • 100% Employer-Paid Medical Insurance.
  • Flexible Paid Time Off (PTO): With a minimum of 15 days.
  • Savings Plans: Flexible Spending Account (FSA), Health Savings Account (HSA), and 401k options.
  • Professional Development: Learning stipend and work-from-home equipment to support a world-class home office.
  • Innovative Culture: Contribute to shaping AI technology in a collaborative, agentic-first environment.
