The Institute of Cognitive Science at the University of Colorado Boulder anticipates offering a temporary research position for a Machine Learning Engineer and Developer for the Learning Engineering Virtual Institute (LEVI). LEVI focuses on the professional learning of mathematics tutors, including using AI-generated feedback during coaching cycles to help improve their instructional practice.
The temporary research position's responsibilities will include development and improvement of discourse analysis components in a service-oriented, API-based software application deployed to an AWS Cloud environment.

Who We Are
The work will be done within a world-class research environment with an exceptional, collaborative research team encompassing researchers in Computer Science, Cognitive Science, and Education as well as external partners. We are housed in the Institute of Cognitive Science (ICS; https://www.colorado.edu/ics/ ), whose mission is to enhance human cognition, learning, and development through the creation of interdisciplinary partnerships. ICS fosters rich scientific interchange across researchers from a broad range of fields including Artificial Intelligence, Linguistics, Psychology, Neuroscience, Computer Science, Philosophy, and Education. ICS serves as an incubator of cutting edge research centers and institutes such as the NSF National AI Institute for Student-AI Teaming (www.isat.ai).
What Your Key Responsibilities Will Be
Responsibilities will include development and improvement of discourse analysis components in a service-oriented, API-based software application deployed to an AWS Cloud environment. Specifically, the engineer will collaborate with researchers and team members to design and implement enhancements to existing software components that integrate large language model (LLM) responses to deliver educationally meaningful and context-specific feedback to instructors, supporting more effective student interaction. The engineer will also collaborate with researchers and team members to design and implement improvements to existing discourse classification models to ensure they accurately represent instructional discourse, including the ability to indicate when insufficient information is available to support accurate or meaningful feedback.

This is a temporary, 9-month position, expected to work 20 hours per week.

What We Can Offer
Hourly rate is $30/hour for work up to 20 hours per week.

What We Require

Commercial AI Engineer or Machine Learning Engineer experience.
