Job Summary

The Vail Resorts Finance Team is committed to Building Leaders and Driving Value. We are seeking a talented Senior Manager of Indirect Tax to lead our North America sales & use tax team for our Company. This position may be remote in one of the states we currently operate in, or based in our corporate headquarters in Broomfield, CO.

The Senior Manager of Indirect Tax will oversee the sales & use tax team, which includes oversight of compliance, leading coordination with taxing jurisdictions for audits, partnering with accounting, IT, and operations leaders on product development and design, overall process improvements, and reviewing sales tax related journal entries and account reconciliations. As needed the Senior Manager of Indirect Tax will also assist with tax planning, diligence, research, and integration related to acquisitions.

This leader will report directly to the Senior Director of Tax.

Key Deliverables for Outstanding Performance:

  • Ensure timely and accurate compliance with all North America sales & use tax filings, including Canadian GST filings.
  • Foster a culture of growth, development and opportunity for the talent on the team and in alignment with Vail Resorts' talent management philosophy.
  • Consider tax planning opportunities and consult on potential tax impacts of business changes.
  • Lead innovation to create best-in-class processes and procedures that maximize accuracy and efficiency.

Job Specifications:

  • Starting Wage: $121,000 - $162,000 annual bonus

Job Responsibilities:

  • Manage U.S. sales and use tax and Canadian GST compliance, ensuring accurate and timely filing of returns and payments. Conduct tax research and planning as needed to support compliance and business operations.
  • Develop processes to analyze large disparate datasets from various financial and point of sale systems.
  • Manage all phases of sales and use tax audits.
  • Help oversee external partners who are utilized as part of the sales & use tax team.
  • Strengthen business partnerships by designing SOPs and delivering targeted sales and use tax training to internal teams.
  • Supervise a team including a combination of employees and external partners, including performance management, hiring, and resource allocation.
  • Review and approve journal entries, reconciliations and other activities related to sales & use tax processes.
  • Provide due diligence and structural advice in partnership with the Senior Director of Tax on a variety of transactions, including mergers, acquisitions, and cross-border structures.
  • Partner with IT teams and review tax setup across multiple point of sale systems.
  • Manage and conduct technical tax research and provide executive-level synthesis to drive decision-making with senior leaders.
  • Lead continuous improvement through goal setting and execution in alignment with Senior Director of Tax and broader accounting and finance organization.
  • Help to lead, develop and inspire the tax team with a focus on high performance, including acquiring, developing, and retaining top talent.
  • May be required to perform other related duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:

  • Minimum 7 years experience with sales and use tax and other indirect tax compliance in multiple jurisdictions.
  • In-depth knowledge of state and local sales and tax regulations and knowledge regarding property tax preferred.
  • Strong data wrangling skills including advanced excel capabilities and preferably Alteryx familiarity.
  • Proficiency with financial software systems, with preference given to candidates familiar with Peoplesoft.
  • Strong understanding of accounts payable, treasury payment systems and basic accounting and tax processes.
  • Strong communication with multiple groups, including government officials, vendors, and outside consultants.
  • Ability to pragmatically solve a wide variety of problems and navigate a range of variables in situations with limited standardization.
  • Self-starter with strong prioritization skills, including ability to navigate tensions of simultaneous requests; ability to communicate effectively with leadership for alignment on what is being prioritized and what isn't in a fast-paced and demanding work environment.
  • Effectively manage and build capabilities and culture for a high-performing professional team.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Licensed CPA.
  • Experience with VAT and / or GST tax reporting.
  • Showcases outstanding organizational and analytical skills.

The expected Total Compensation for this role is $121,000 - $162,000 annual bonus. Individual compensation decisions are based on a variety of factors.
