Job description

Hybrid Role: Insurance Defense Associate

Highlights

  • True specialist platform: Build expertise in a niche practice that combines maritime, transportation, insurance, and subrogation work rather than joining a more generic defense shop.
  • Interesting, technical cases: Matters can include maritime casualty, personal injury and wrongful death exposure, cargo disputes, marine insurance issues, transportation losses, and related coverage questions.
  • Direct access to experienced partners: Work closely with senior lawyers who are deeply embedded in the industry and known within their field.
  • Strong industry reputation: The firm and its lawyers are active in key sector associations and regularly speak on industry topics, which is a strong signal of credibility and profile in the space.
  • Broad litigation exposure: Gain experience across both maritime and non-maritime disputes, including defense, coverage, and subrogation work.
  • Long-term growth opportunity: Ideal for someone who wants to develop into a true specialist and build a long-term career in a boutique where contributions are visible.

The Role

You will work on a mix of insurance defense, maritime, and transportation litigation matters, with responsibilities likely to include:

  • Managing cases from early investigation through resolution.
  • Drafting pleadings, motions, and coverage analyses.
  • Handling written discovery and depositions.
  • Working on casualty, cargo, injury, and insurance disputes.
  • Supporting trial and appellate work where needed.
  • Communicating directly with insurer, transportation, and industry clients.

Why a candidate should want this role

  • You get to build a real specialty that will differentiate you in the market.
  • You will be part of a smaller, expert team rather than one cog in a large defense platform.
  • The work is likely to be more varied and intellectually interesting than standard general liability files.
  • You will have close exposure to lawyers with deep sector knowledge and real standing in the field.
  • It is a strong fit for someone who wants hands-on litigation experience, direct responsibility, and a clear long-term niche.

Compensation

  • Up to $200,000 base depending on experience.
  • Benefits package.
  • Hybrid flexibility.

Location

  • San Francisco Bay Area - Hybrid working model.

Must-Haves

  • 2-3 years of civil litigation or insurance defense experience.
  • Active California Bar license.
  • Strong drafting, research, discovery, and deposition skills.
