Job description

About Ambitus AI:

Ambitus AI is an applied-AI product and research company. Our work helps frontier labs and top enterprises train, test, and deploy AI agents that automate high ROI tasks. We're a highly technical team based in San Francisco with backgrounds from Mercor, Google, Stanford, and more.

As a Chemical Engineer / Process Simulation Specialist, you'd help us create training data for a project with one of the world's top AI labs.

Your Role:

As a Chemical Engineer / Process Simulation Specialist, you will apply your professional expertise in chemical engineering, thermodynamics, and unit operation design to help design, execute, and evaluate realistic process simulation workflows. The core objective of this role is to translate real, day-to-day chemical engineering reasoning into structured tasks and evaluations, enabling AI systems to learn how experienced engineers build flowsheets, select thermodynamic packages, and design separation and reaction systems.

Compensation:

  • Compensation: $120-140/hour
  • Commitment: 15-25 hours per week
  • Type: Contract, part-time
  • Location: Fully remote

What You'll Do:

  • Execute tasks within DWSIM to validate feasibility and establish ground-truth solutions
  • Write detailed task specifications for process simulation workflows, including clear prompts, expected outputs, and grading criteria
  • Build process flowsheets covering distillation, reaction, heat exchange, and separation systems with appropriate thermodynamic models and convergence strategies
  • Define grading rubrics that assess both technical execution (e.g., correct unit operation setup, converged recycle loops, consistent stream tables) and engineering judgment (e.g., thermodynamic package selection, feed stage placement, reasonable energy duties)
  • Provide clear, written documentation of your workflows, reasoning, and quality assessments

What We're Looking For:

We are specifically seeking experienced chemical engineers and process engineers with formal training in chemical engineering and hands-on flowsheet simulation experience.

Relevant Backgrounds:

  • Degree in chemical engineering or a closely related discipline
  • Proficiency and fluency with DWSIM, Aspen Plus, Aspen HYSYS, CHEMCAD, UniSim, or similar process simulators
  • Process engineers, chemical engineering consultants, or simulation specialists
  • Engineers with experience at refineries, petrochemical plants, specialty chemical manufacturers, EPC firms, or pharmaceutical/biotech process development
  • Independent consultants with a portfolio of separation, reaction, or heat integration design projects
  • Hands-on experience with thermodynamic property packages, distillation column design, reactor modeling, recycle convergence, and process optimization
