Description

The Director of Programs & Events is a senior leader responsible for expanding the reach and impact of Georgia Humanities, an Emory affiliate, through public humanities programming, educational initiatives, strategic partnerships, grants strategy, and community engagement. Reporting to the President, the Director serves as a visible leader and advocate for the humanities.

The Director leads the development and execution of a statewide public humanities strategy that advances Georgia Humanities' mission, visibility, partnerships, and educational reach, working closely with educational institutions, cultural organizations, local governments, community leaders, and statewide partners.

As a member of the leadership team, the Director helps position Georgia Humanities as a statewide and national leader in public humanities.

Key Responsibilities

Public Humanities Strategy and Partnerships

  • Lead the development and execution of a statewide public humanities strategy that expands Georgia Humanities' impact, visibility, partnerships, and educational reach.
  • Design and implement programs that foster civic engagement, cultural understanding, historical literacy, and community dialogue.
  • Cultivate and manage strategic partnerships that advance Georgia Humanities' mission and public impact.
  • Serve as Georgia Humanities' representative on collaborative statewide initiatives.
  • Serve as a visible spokesperson and ambassador for Georgia Humanities, representing the organization at conferences, public events, educational forums, and statewide initiatives.
  • Identify emerging opportunities for Georgia Humanities to serve as a convener, collaborator, and catalyst for civic participation.

National History Day Georgia and Educational Initiatives

  • Provide strategic leadership and oversight for National History Day Georgia as the organization's flagship educational program, including day-to-day competition operations (judging, logistics, awards).
  • Expand participation among Title I schools, rural communities, alternative education settings, juvenile justice facilities, and other underserved populations.
  • Oversee statewide teacher professional development.
  • Cultivate partnerships with school districts, RESAs, colleges and universities, museums, libraries, archives, and state education leaders.

Grants and Community Investment

  • Set strategic direction for Georgia Humanities' grantmaking, ensuring equitable access for organizations serving diverse and underrepresented communities.
  • Direct the Program Coordinator's administration of grant programs, working with the Grants Committee to set strategy.
  • Foster relationships with nonprofit organizations, libraries, museums, educational institutions, historical societies, and cultural organizations statewide to support community-based humanities projects.

Organizational Leadership

  • Participate in strategic planning and organizational decision-making as a member of the executive leadership team.
  • Develop annual program goals and budgets.
  • Supervise program staff, consultants, interns, and contractors.
  • Assist the President in preparing reports and presentations for the Board of Directors, funders, and community stakeholders.
  • Contribute to a collaborative organizational culture focused on innovation, service, and public engagement.

  • Experience managing budgets, supervising staff, and leading cross-functional teams to achieve organizational goals.
  • Strong understanding of public humanities, civic engagement, community-based learning, and strategies that promote inclusion.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree and five years of higher education, events, project management or related experience.
  • Prior work experience with faculty affairs in a higher education environment preferred.

Work Environment

This role will be granted the opportunity to work from home regularly but must be able to commute to Emory University on a flexible weekly schedule based upon business needs. This role requires residency in the state of GA.
