Tech and Operations Lead (25 hours/week+)

This is a fully remote position requiring availability from 7 am EST (Noon GMT) to Noon EST (5 pm GMT), 5 hours per day. You will need excellent, reliable internet and a computer.

The role involves supporting internal systems, working collaboratively with the staff team. It's a blend of operations, utilizing various tech tools, and project management.

About Social Movement Technologies (SMT)

SMT's mission is to provide organizing strategy, training, and campaign support to build people-power for justice in the digital age. As a nonprofit movement support group, we are 100% dedicated to meeting the needs of social change organizations. We operate leanly, achieving much with limited resources, mirroring the approach of many groups we assist. SMT increasingly supports groups focused on racial and climate justice that require assistance with online scaling. In our first 13 years, SMT's small but effective team has trained staff from over 6,800 groups and unions and provided in-depth campaign support to more than 240 organizations.

Compensation and Hours

This position is for 25 hours per week. Compensation varies based on the cost of living in the applicant's location. U.S.-based candidates can expect approximately $35/hour. Please refer to the country rate sheet for specifics.

Key Responsibilities May Include:

• Loading emails into the emailing tool and ensuring error-free distribution.
• Setting up courses on the website and managing the registration process.
• Processing payroll, payments, billing, and invoicing for the team.
• Responding to inquiries and providing support.

What We're Looking For:

Required Skills:

• Proficiency in WordPress, Google Suite, and social media posting.
• Experience with project management tools (ClickUp or Asana).
• Ability to manipulate data in spreadsheets.
• Experience loading emails and segmenting lists in a CRM (e.g., Action Network; MailChimp is not sufficient).
• Understanding of Slack best practices.

Bonus Skills:

• Experience setting up Zapier automations.
• Familiarity with AI tools for workflow optimization.
• Experience with payroll processing and invoicing.

Essential Attributes:

• High attention to detail and excellent proofing/copyediting skills.
• Commitment to and experience with movement work.
• Experience working with or within Black/brown-led groups.
• Ability to multitask, manage multiple projects, and communicate progress reliably.
• Friendly, encouraging demeanor, conveyed effectively via email, video conferencing, and phone.
• Strong motivation to learn and stay updated on new tech developments.
• Self-discipline to manage your schedule and meet deadlines.
• Long-term commitment (over a year or two) is desired; this is not a short-term position.
• Proven project management experience, including team management and deadline breakdown.

Movement operations experience and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced, demanding environment are crucial.
